The Water Resources Department (WRD) is understood to have lodged a complaint with the Avinashipalayam police about the damage caused to Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) Canal at the 113.5 km mark.
The breach was caused last week by unknown miscreants to divert water at a time when farmers in the tail-end areas have been fighting hard to stop pilferage of water meant for agricultural purposes.
The Monitoring Committee formed with the Revenue Divisional Officer of Tiruppur South is also seized of the issue, it is learnt.
The Monitoring Committee that also consists of officials of the Police and Water Resources Department is mandated with the task of undertaking night rounds to stop water theft in the PAP Canal.
On its part, the PAP Vellakovil Branch Canal (Kangayam-Vellakovil) Water Conservation Association has submitted a petition to the RDO of Tiruppur South seeking strict action against those responsible for damaging irrigation canals, and illegally diverting and stealing water meant for rightful beneficiaries. The association, in the petition, also emphasised on fixing responsibility on the WRD officials concerned.
