Civil Judge and member-secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Mariyappa has said that every woman must have knowledge about protection from domestic violence even as they face violence from women themselves within families.
He was addressing participants at a training workshop on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act in Yadgir recently.
“The Act was brought to protect women from domestic violence. At times, women face violence from women within the family. The Act will protect such victims and punish offenders accordingly. Thus, every woman must have knowledge about the law under which they are protected,” he said and added that victims should dial the helpline 181 for protection from violence.
“Every woman should be treated with dignity and respect. There shouldn’t be gender inequality. The lifestyle of women will change when they are given respect and support. The Act provides relief where women are subjected to domestic violence,” the judge said.
Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Veeranagouda has said that women may be subjected to violence if they don’t have proper education and knowledge about the Act.
“The joint family concept may reduce violence against women because the emotional connectivity among every individual in such families won’t allow for such violence to happen,” he added.
Prem Murthy, Savitri Patil, Vanajakshi and others were present.
