Wards of fireworks workers killed in accidents given monthly assistance

Forty-one wards of fireworks workers, who were killed in workspot accidents, were given orders for monthly maintenance assistance here on Tuesday.

Revenue Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran handed over the orders for the monthly maintenance assistance under the Department of Labour Welfare and Skill Development. A sum of ₹2,000 is given for those children up to 18 years of age who have lost one of their parents and ₹4,000 is given to those who have lost both their parents.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had announced that the wards of fireworks workers, who were killed in fire accidents in the fireworks units, would get the maintenance allowance up to the age of 18 and also educational allowance up to higher education during his visit to Virudhunagar on November 10, 2024, he said.

Subsequently, the Chief Minister sanctioned ₹5 crore to create a corpus fund by the Virudhunagar District Collector to decide on identifying the beneficiaries at the district level.

A total maintenance assistance of ₹5.62 lakh was distributed to the 41 children, whose parents were killed between November 2024 and May 2025.

The Minister said these children would also get educational assistance for pursuing various courses in government colleges, aided colleges and for admission under the government quota in self-financed colleges.

Virudhunagar Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan, Tenkasi MP Rani Shrikumar, MLAs A.R.R. Srinivasan (Virudhunagar), S. Thangapandian (Rajapalayam) and A.R.R. Raghuraman (Sattur) were present on the occasion.

Additional Director, Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, R. Siddharthan, and Joint Directors R. Ravichandran and Rajkumar were also present.
