In a move to boost tourism and preserve natural heritage, the Uttar Pradesh govt has approved a Rs 2.85 crore project to develop Baghel Tal, the state’s largest wetland, into an eco-tourism destination.
Located in Payagpur in Bahraich, Baghel Tal was once renowned for its vibrant ecosystem, attracting diverse species of local and migratory birds. However, years of neglect and encroachment had led to its deterioration. Now, the wetland is set to regain its glory as the govt has already released the first instalment of INR 1.40 crore for the project.
Under the initiative, Baghel Tal will undergo beautification and infrastructure development to position it as a key tourist attraction on the state’s tourism map.
District magistrate Monika Rani outlined the plan, which includes installing solar lights along the lake’s periphery, constructing a grand arched deck for panoramic views, and creating selfie points for visitors. Additionally, a circular open-air amphitheatre with stepped seating, green spaces, and benches will be developed to enhance the area’s appeal.
The project also aims to generate employment opportunities for locals. Shops will be established on both sides of the amphitheatre, offering refreshments and showcasing local handicrafts. Vending shops and eateries will further provide livelihoods to the community.
Once completed, Baghel Tal is expected to become a prominent eco-tourism destination in Uttar Pradesh, attracting nature enthusiasts and tourists alike. The development will not only restore the wetland’s ecological balance but also boost the local economy by creating jobs and promoting regional crafts, said an official.
