Two electrocuted near Perur in Coimbatore

Two persons, both relatives and daily wage workers, died of electrocution at Perur in Coimbatore on Sunday.

The police said that P. Vigneshwaran, 31, from Ramar Kovil Street at Theethipalayam near Perur, and his relative T. Nagaraj, 40, from Ayyasamy Kovil Street at Theethipalayam, died after suffering electric shock at the former’s residence.

According to the police, Vigneshwaran was residing with his family in an old, tiled-roof house. The main switch of the power connection to the house was fixed on the wall in the rear side that was drenched in recent rain.

As per the statement given by the family members to the police, Vigneshwaran fell unconscious, while standing in the rear side of the house and talking over the mobile phone around 10.30 a.m. Nagaraj and a few others were also present. They suspected that he had a cardiac arrest and rushed him to a hospital at Mathampatty. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival at the hospital.

Later, Nagaraj showed relatives and neighbours where Vigneshwaran was standing when he collapsed. As Nagaraj touched the wall, he reportedly came in contact with a live wire. He suffered electric shock and died, the police said.

The Perur police rushed to the spot after receiving an alert and shifted the bodies to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where doctors performed post-mortem. The police said that a live wire, which was in contact with the drenched wall, could have led to the electrocution.
