Trains delayed as irate passengers pull chain to protest against non-functioning AC

A number of trains heading for Visakhapatnam junction were delayed reportedly by around two hours after passengers of A1 coach of 12508 Silchar-Thiruvananthapuram express pulled the chain as the AC was not functioning in the coach.

The chain was pulled after the train crossed Visakhapatnam, forcing the railway authorities to shunt the train back to the station to rectify the problem, according to sources.

Meanwhile, passengers waiting at Duvvada station grew listless as trains to various destinations were not arriving from Visakhapatnam, and no information was forthcoming from the railway officials at the station.

A commuter, who sought anonymity, said the Duvvada station was crowded owing to the delay, and women and children suffered the most. The commuter added that the passengers could have at least been given information regarding the probable arrival time and the reason for the delay.

The problem was sorted out around 9.30 p.m. and announcements were made on the public address system at Duvvada on the arrival of trains, the passenger added.

“The chain was pulled near a place where the lines crisscross. Had they stopped the train at the station itself, there would have been any delay in the movement of other trains,” Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra told The Hindu. “The train had to be brought back to the station to rectify the problem. Other trains have started moving,” he said.
