Traffic on the busy Cumbum Mettu ghat section came to a grinding halt on Friday evening, when a huge and old tree was uprooted due to heavy wind accompanied by steady rainfall.
Everyday, apart from the tourist and goods vehicles, hundreds of workers from Tamil Nadu side travelled in jeeps to Kerala to work in cardamom estates. From Cumbum Mettu foothills, the seven km ghat section has many hairpin bends.
On Friday, when there was heavy wind experienced in the ghat section, a huge tree was uprooted at the 18th hairpin bend. As a result, vehicles from both sides could not move.
On information, the forest and police staffs from the checkpost rushed to the spot and cleared them with public help. Almost after three hours, the traffic was resumed, police said.
