Tamil Nadu Budget: T.N. announces new airport in Rameswaram

Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Friday (March 14, 2025) said to boost tourist arrivals in south Tamil Nadu and promote the overall development of economically backward regions, a new airport would be established in the Rameswaram area of Ramanathapuram district.

Presenting the 2025-26 Budget, he announced the Tamil Nadu Maritime Transport Manufacturing Policy 2025 to revive the State’s maritime heritage and position Tamil Nadu as a global shipbuilding hub. This policy, he said, would promote investment and innovation in ship and boat designing, ship hull fabrication, and ship engine production. The growth of this industry will generate 30,000 jobs in districts such as Cuddalore and Thoothukudi, while also fostering the development of the micro, small, and medium enterprises sector.

The Minister said to strengthen the life sciences ecosystem and establish Tamil Nadu as a leader in emerging fields like biosimilars and therapeutics, a state-of-the-art bioscience park would be developed near Chennai. This park will feature world-class infrastructure, common testing centres, laboratories and other essential technological facilities required for manufacturing high-value-added products in the sector, along with plug-and-play manufacturing facilities. In the Budget Estimates, a sum of ₹3,915 crore has been allocated for the Industries, Investment Promotion, and Commerce Department.
