Several colleges, research institutions celebrate National Science Day in Tiruchi

Educational institutions and research organisations in and around Tiruchi celebrated the National Science Day with a host of activities this week.

The day, celebrated on February 28, honours the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Nobel laureate Sir C.V. Raman in 1928.

Open day at NRCB

The ICAR – National Research Centre for Banana (ICAR-NRCB) organised an open day for students, farmers, and the general public as part of its Science Day programme on Friday.

V.A. Parthasarathy, former director of ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and V.G. Malathi, retired principal scientist of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi were among the special invitees.

In his address, Mr. Parthasarathy paid tribute to eminent Indian scientists and urged students to develop innovative thinking. Ms. Malathi spoke about India’s scientific heritage, advancements in stem cell therapy, and the latest breakthroughs in genome editing.

An exhibition on banana varietal diversity, including ICAR-NRCB-developed cultivars, popular varieties, landraces, and wild germplasm lines was held on the campus. Visitors were taken to the ICAR-NRCB farm, where they explored the Common Incubation Centre (CIC), which houses five production lines of value-added banana products.

R. Selvarajan, director, ICAR-NRCB, and Guru Aranganathan, retired professor of Agricultural Extension, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Tiruchi, spoke.

A student exhibition on cutting-edge technologies innovative research projects formed the highlight of the Science Day programme hosted by Shrimati Indira Gandhi College in association with Young Indians and My Bharat on February 27.

Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Youth Affairs and Sports, inaugurated the programme through video conferencing. The Minister spoke on the importance of science in daily life. He encouraged students to build a strong India through their inventions.

G. Aghila, director, National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, and B. Jeyapragash, controller of examinations (in-charge), Bharathidasan University, launched the science exhibition. S. Senthil Kumar, Director, My Bharat, spoke.

SIGC students G. Loseka Sri, S. Gracika, D. Thamizh Thendral, K. Priyanka, and A. Fathima Beevi were awarded Youth Icon awards for their excellence in sports.

At the SRM Tiruchi Arts and Science College, National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers conducted a series of competitions for students from February 26 to 28 in collaboration with My Bharath and Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK).

Students showcased their skills in rangoli, essay writing, and painting contests. S. Keerthana, district youth officer, and other NYK officials, were among the special invitees.

Drone club

National Science Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukkottai, with the inauguration of the Drone Club being the highlight of the proceedings. The celebration was organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering under the aegis of the students’ chapter of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers.

N. Suresh Kumar, managing director, Nova Aerospace, Pudukkottai, explained the different kinds of drones and their usage in varied sectors. He highlighted key concepts such as aerodynamics, propulsion systems, flight control mechanisms, and navigation technologies.

Sumner’s Club of Biochemistry of J.J. College of Arts and Science in Pudkottai celebrated Science Day on the theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat”, by conducting competitions for students in essay-writing, slogans, floor art and cookery.

R. Senthil Kumar, head and associate professor, Department of Biochemistry, Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College, Tiruchi, spoke about the latest scientific developments, and shared insights on competitive exams.

The Scientific Research Excellence Awards ceremony marked the Science Day celebrations at Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan University (DSU) in Perambalur on Friday. The programme included a display of posters showcasing significant research conducted by students of DSU and Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Engineering College. Faculty members, who have published research articles in Scopus and SCI-indexed journals, were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates. DSU chancellor A. Srinivasan, spoke.
