Security guard held for attempted sexual assault on minor at govt. shelter in Chitlapakkam

A 50-year-old security guard was arrested for attempting to sexually assault a 13-year-old girl staying at a government-run women shelter in Chitlapakkam.

A senior official of the Tambaram Police Commissionerate said the girl was admitted to the Social Welfare Department’s women’s home last week. Following this, officials at the shelter found her crying with a broken leg. She told them that someone tried to sexually assault her on Saturday. When she called for help, he pushed her down and and fled the spot.

The police investigated and found that Mathew, a security guard at the shelter, was the culprit and arrested him. The girl was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment.

Leaders express shock

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran on Monday expressed shock over the report of an attempted sexual assault on the girl inmate.

Referring to the arrest of a security guard, Mr. Palaniswami, in a post on his social media handle, contended that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should feel ashamed over the incident, which had only proven that such offenders had no sense of fear of the government’s measures. “When are you going to control those who are going out of control during your regime with regard to sexual harassment?” the AIADMK leader asked Mr Stalin.

Mr. Dhinakaran alleged that the trend of violence against women had been growing, and this had caused an “extraordinary situation” in the State. He called for steps to create an environment of security for women.
