Even though the rain intensity reduced in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Monday, officials shifted residents of a few flood-affected areas in Kundapura and Byndoor taluks of Udupi district to safer places following the forecast of heavy to very heavy rains on Tuesday
Meanwhile, Ronald Fernandes, 52, of Udyavara died after slipping into an overflowing storm-water drain in Udyavara in Udupi district. The Kapu police said the incident occurred around 8 p.m. when Fernandes was returning home in the rain. His body was retrieved a few meters away from the place of the incident, the police said.
Udupi district recorded an average of 162.9 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Chitturu village in Kundapura taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 274 mm in the State, followed by 261 mm in Heruru village, 255.5 mm in Kergalu village, and 253.5 mm in Kalthodu village, all in Byndoor taluk.
The ancient Kamalashile Durgaparameshwari Temple and Maranakatte Shri Bhramalingeshwara temples in Kundapura taluk were waterlogged following overflowing rivers. Flooding was observed in the villages of Salbuda, Arehole, Nada, and Padukone, which are located on the banks of the Souparnika River. The Maravante–Padukoneoad was waterlogged.
Byndoor MLA Gururaj Gantihole visited flood-affected areas in Khambadakone village. People from waterlogged houses were shifted on boats.
The Dakshina Kannada district recorded an average of 102.9 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Bala village recorded the highest rainfall of 215.5 mm, followed by 206 mm in Bajpe, both in Mangaluru taluk. Additionally, 187 mm was recorded in Manchi, and 184.5 mm in Pudu village, both in Bantwal taluk.
In light of the threat of a roadside boulder falling, residents of Veerakambha village in Bantwal taluk were shifted to safe places on Monday.
Landslides and partial damage to some houses were reported in a few places in Bantwal taluk. Following a landslip on the road in Kalkuka, personnel from Kariyangala Gram Panchayat in Bantwal taluk took steps to clear the blockage. Similarly, steps were taken to clear the blockage on the Bambila-Tilambila road in Amtady village of Bantwal taluk.
According to information provided by the Dakshina Kannada district administration, one house was severely damaged, while 11 others were partially damaged, due to heavy rain on Sunday.
As many as 104 electricity poles, five transformers, and 5.2 km of power supply lines were damaged. Three bridges and culverts, as well as 0.28 km of a major district road, were also damaged. Four persons continue to stay in the relief centre in Manglauru’s Mini Town Hall, while six others were staying in the relief centre opened in the Government PU College in Uppinangady, said an official release.
Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath visited the flood-affected areas in Yekkur, Tochila Kattepuni, Vaidyanatha Nagar, Ganesh Nagar, Kadekar, on Monday and directed officials to take steps to prevent flooding.
