Residents have demanded the GCC to simplify the procedure for resolving issues pertaining to ‘clubbing of property tax assessment’ made for a single residential building that has multiple property tax assessment numbers.
Residents have complained that they have been asked to pay property tax for multiple property tax assessments of the same house after the data has inadvertently been included in the property tax database. Residents point to the sudden rise in property tax assessments from around 11 lakh properties to 13.5 lakh properties in the past few years, claiming that many of the property tax assessments were multiple entries of the same property.
A part of the increase in the number of property tax assessments is likely to reduce once the GCC completes work on clubbing of assessments and after the residents’ appeal for assessment after they have noticed the irregular assessments in property tax.
MDMK councillor S.Jeevan said GCC officials and Metrowater officials resolved an issue of multiple entries after following a procedure for a duration of 45 days. “The GCC and Metrowater should simplify the system of resolving issues related to multiple assessments by clubbing property tax assessments or rectifying the problem of irregular assessments,” he said.
Councillor G.V.Nagavalli said multiple assessments of property tax were resolved in her ward and officials were ready to resolve the issue once the residents complain about the issue, following the correct procedure. Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations T.K.Shanmugham said many of the issues in property tax have been reported in added zones of the city.
GCC officials said such issues will be resolved by the assistant revenue officers if the house is less than 3000 sq ft and by zonal officers or additional city revenue officers if the building is less than 5000 sq ft. Senior officials are empowered to make decisions if the building is more than 5000 sq ft.
