Heavy rain lashed Salem on Monday (June 9, 2025) night, leading to water stagnation in several places in the city.

At 8 p.m. on Monday, Salem city and a few rural areas in the district began experiencing rains. In the city, heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and thunder, continued for more than an hour in Hasthampatti, Ammapet, Nethimedu, Shevapet, Four Roads, and Five Roads. Rainwater mixed with sewage inundated roads near Old Bus Stand, New Bus Stand, Five Roads, Sankar Nagar, Narayana Nagar, Pachapatti, and Kitchipalayam. Commuters on two-wheelers, in particular, struggled to pass through these places.

At Omalur, waterlogging was reported at the Omalur bus stand and Bazaar Street. At Vellalagundam Pirivu, due to a lightning strike, a 25-year-old coconut tree caught fire. On being alerted, firefighters rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. The tree, however, was completely destroyed.

In the last 24 hours that ended at 6 a.m. on Tuesday (June 10), Omalur received 39 mm of rainfall, followed by 27.4 mm in Salem, 14 mm in Thammampatti, and 2.4 mm in Yercaud.

In Namakkal district too, rainfall was reported in a few places. Rasipuram received the highest amount of rain at 32 mm, followed by 15 mm in Kolli Hills Semmedu, 10.60 mm in Mangalapuram, 9 mm in Puduchatram, and 0.50 mm in Collectorate.
