The railways has agreed to build a subway across the railway level-crossing adjacent to the Tiruchi Town Railway Station, MP Durai Vaiko said on Friday.
Although the State Highways Department and the railways have begun construction of an overbridge across the level-crossing (LC 249) on the Cauvery Road near the Railway Station, local residents sought the construction of a subway across another level-crossing situated adjacent to the station, he said.
“The residents said there was heavy traffic congestion, especially during peakhours, at this railway crossing too. Hence I took up the matter with the Divisional Railway Manager who has agreed to take steps to build a subway there,” Mr. Durai Vaiko told a press conference after inspecting the spot.
He said that the railways would build another subway across the railway line at Manjathidal where a MEMU shed was being established by the railways. The railway officials have agreed to make the structure slightly bigger to allow passage of light vehicles such as ambulances and assured him that the subway would be ready by September, he added.
Mr. Durai Vaiko visited Mela Kumarasepuram where the local residents had sought the construction of an overbridge. He said he would take up the demand with the government agencies concerned.
He checked the progress of construction of the overbridge coming up near the Fort Railway Station in the city. The railway officials, he said, had assured him that the construction of the bridge on the railway portion would be completed by January after which the Corporation would link the approach road to the bridge. “I expect the overbridge to be ready by June 2026,” Mr. Durai Vaiko said.
