The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has been ranked 4th in India and 215th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings 2026, the institute said in a statement on Friday. The institute jumped seven places from its position in the 2025 rankings.
The QS World University Rankings 2026 evaluated 8,467 institutions worldwide and featured 1,501 universities in the final list. IIT Delhi is the best-ranked Indian institution in the rankings, climbing more than 70 places in two years to secure the 123rd spot in the coveted list.
IIT Kharagpur has performed well in parameters like sustainability, employer reputation, citations per faculty and international research network, the statement noted. “This global recognition is a testament to our collective pursuit of excellence in knowledge creation, dissemination, and societal impact. We remain committed to fostering innovation and interdisciplinary learning at a global level,” said Prof. Amit Patra on the latest rankings before handing over the charge to his successor, the newly appointed director Prof. Suman Chakraborty.
The official handing-over of charge is scheduled to take place next week. Patra has been serving as acting director since January 1, following the completion of tenure of Director Prof. VK Tewari on December 31.
