Police launch probe into abduction of jeweller in Egmore 


Egmore Police is investigating the complaint of a 64-year-old jeweller from Karaikudi who was allegedly abducted and robbed by a six-member gang in broad daylight at Egmore on Thursday. 

Police sources said Ravichandran from Karaikudi in Sivaganga district, had come to the city to purchase ornaments and was waiting near Sacred Heart Church to board a bus to return home. Around 8.30 am, a group of men approached him pretending to ask for directions. They overpowered him and forced him into a car at knifepoint.

The police said that inside the car, the gang assaulted him and stole ₹31.5 lakh, 132 grams of gold jewellery  and 1.25 kilograms of silver from him. After driving some distance, they abandoned him near Ramachandra Hospital in Porur and fled. He sustained minor injuries and lodged a complaint.

 Three special teams have been formed to track the suspects. Police are analysing CCTV footage from the area.
