A survey to measure the land required for constructing a subway near at Ukkadai Ariyamangalam in the city was carried out recently.
The move comes in the wake of persistent demands from Ariyamangalam residents for the construction of a subway across the Chennai-Tiruchi railway line.
In April this year, Durai Vaiko, Tiruchi MP, had inspected the area and urged the Tiruchi Divisional railway authorities to build a subway at Ukkadai Ariyamangalam. About 15,000 residents have been facing hardship as the railway line bisected Ariyamangalam. The railways planned to construct a retaining wall on grounds of public safety, but this would aggravate the problem as the residents would have to take a detour of 1.5 km to cross over, he had pointed out.
Mr. Durai Vaiko, in a statement, said that after he had taken up the issue with the Divisional Railway Manager M.S. Anbalagan, the railways had agreed to build a subway. Following this, the land surveyor had measured the land required for the construction of the subway in the presence of the Corporation Zonal Chairman M. Mathivanan and others, he said and expressed confidence that the subway would be built soon.
