Pilgrimage ends on a tragic note as five youngsters drown in Godavari at Basar in Nirmal district


A pilgrimage to Basar, the abode of Goddess Gnana Saraswati in Nirmal district, turned tragic for a group of pilgrims from Hyderabad as five of them, including three siblings, drowned in the Godavari river in the famous temple town on Sunday (June 15, 2025).

According to sources, the incident occurred when five youngsters, who were part of an 18-member group of pilgrims, drowned while taking bath in the Godavari at around 11 a.m. on Sunday. They drowned after getting caught in the strong undercurrents.

On receiving information, the temple town police rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies of the five youngsters from the river with the help of swimmers.

The deceased were identified as 20-year-old Rakesh and his brothers 18-year-old Madan and 16-year-old Bharath, their relatives – 19-year-old Vinod and 22-yearr-old Rithik, all belonging to the same extended family, sources added.

Their bodies were shifted to the mortuary in Bhainsa town for postmortem. The tragic death of five youngsters during the pilgrimage, left their family members heartbroken. The Basar police have registered a case and are investigating.
