More than 100 people from five revenue villages in Palladam have objected to the plans of the State Highways Department, National Highways wing, to develop a bypass for 9.9 km.
The residents submitted a petition to the Divisional Engineer of the NH wing in Coimbatore on Friday and demanded that the bypass should pass along a 13.85 km alignment that was finalised earlier.
The Tamil Nadu government had promised that it will sanction ₹195 crore for the project soon. However, instead of developing the road along the previous alignment, the Department is looking at a new alignment that will pass through three wards in Palladam town and is just 1.8 km away from the town. Several powerloom units, PAP fed agriculture lands, residences, and poultry units will be affected, they said.
“The Divisional Engineer has assured us that the survey works for the new alignment will be suspended and a decision will be taken by the Highways Minister,” said Govindaraj, one of the protesters.
