More than 33,700 people have died and 70,255 others suffered injuries in 79,523 road accidents in the last six years in Chhattisgarh, the State government informed the Assembly on Tuesday (February 25, 2025).
Answering an unstarred question asked by senior BJP MLA and former Minister Ajay Chandrakar on the second day of the Budget Session, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai provided these statistics in a written reply.
Mr. Chandrakar also asked about the schemes launched by the government for financial assistance or treatment of people affected by road accidents and what is the procedure to avail the benefits of those plans. To this, the Chief Minister informed that Ayushman Bharat card holders were allowed free medical check-up and treatment of various diseases and injuries caused in road accidents in government and private hospitals within the prescribed limit.
It further added that the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in 2022 notified a new scheme for compensation of victims of hit and run cases. Under this scheme, a provision has been made to increase the amount of compensation from ₹12,500 to ₹50,000 in case of serious injury and from ₹25,000 to ₹2 lakh in case of death, it said.
Black spots
According to the government’s reply, 848 “black spots” (accident-prone areas) had been identified in Chhattisgarh in the given period for which the query was made. Of these, corrective measures have been taken by the construction agencies concerned in 790 instances, it added in its reply.
