Tamil Nadu has never had a coalition government, and the DMK will form the government on its own in 2026, said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko in Madurai on Tuesday (July 8, 2025).
Speaking to mediapersons, he said the DMK would win the elections with a clear majority, and form the government on its own. “I am confident that the DMK, under the leadership of M.K. Stalin, will win hands down. They will form the government once more,” he asserted.
The AIADMK, he said, would not be able to make its mark because of its alliance with the BJP, which had been rejected by the people of Tamil Nadu. The BJP, he claimed, was under the grip of the RSS, which was determined to “make an impact on the Dravidian land somehow. This is not going to happen in Tamil Nadu, he claimed.
To keep divisive forces such as the RSS at bay, the MDMK has supported the DMK and would continue to do so, Mr. Vaiko said, adding that his party stood for principles.
He recalled his protest against the presence of then Sri Lankan President Rajapakse at the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister about a decade ago, though he had good relations with the BJP in the NDA. “The MDMK stands by its principles and opposed tooth and nail those forces that were against Tamils and the people of Tamil Nadu. With this sole objective, the party has been with the DMK and other like-minded secular parties in Tamil Nadu,” he said.
Responding to a question on anti-incumbency playing a role in the upcoming elections, he said, any party, which has ruled a State or the country, would have to face such issues. This will apply to the DMK too. However, he said that Mr. Stalin had implemented many welfare schemes, including those that were not announced in the party’s election manifesto in the run-up to the 2021 polls.
A classic example is the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam (KMUT), he said, which provided ₹1,000 to women in the State. This has been a big success, as it has helped over 1.15 crore beneficiaries every month.
Zone-wise meetings
Tiruchi MP and MDMK principal secretary Durai Vaiko said the party has been conducting zone-wise meetings with the cadre. It has completed meetings in the west zone, and it would cover the remaining zones, in phases, in about two months. He announced that the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, falling on September 15, would be celebrated in Tiruchi.
Party functionaries from Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, and other districts attended the zonal meeting in Madurai. MDMK MLA Boominathan presided over the meeting.
