Man killed in elephant attack in Erode district


A 71-year-old man from Kooppukadu in Anthiyur, who sustained injuries in a wild elephant attack on Friday (June 6, 2025), died at a hospital in Erode on Saturday (June 7, 2025).

According to the police, the victim, G. Ganeshan, had taken his cattle for grazing in the Chennampatti forest area on Friday morning but did not return home in the evening. Concerned villagers launched a search and found him critically injured in the forest. The Chennampatti Forest Range Office and Bargur police were immediately informed.

Ganeshan was first taken to a private hospital in Anthiyur and later shifted to another private hospital. As his condition worsened, he was moved to a private hospital in Erode and subsequently to the Government Headquarters Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries at around 4.30 a.m. on Saturday.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that he had been attacked by a wild elephant. The police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and further investigations are under way.
