Man killed as school van hits him near Tharangambadi; students escape unhurt

A man was killed and another seriously injured in a road accident involving a private school van near Tharangambadi in Mayiladuthurai district on Wednesday morning. Fortunately, the students travelling in the van escaped without injuries.

The incident occurred near NN Chavadi on Ananthamangalam main road. A van carrying more than 15 students from Thirukkadaiyur to a private school—in Poraiyar—reportedly lost control at high speed, rammed a neem tree, and made a sudden U-turn. In the process, it collided with a two-wheeler coming in the opposite direction.

The two-wheeler riders, Raja, a painter from Church Street in Poraiyar, and his associate Gabriel, were hit by the van. Raja died on the spot with severe facial injuries, while Gabriel sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Government Hospital in Mayiladuthurai.

The Poraiyar police have launched an investigation into the incident and sent Raja’s body for post-mortem at the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital. Police are also searching for the van driver, who reportedly fled from the scene following the accident.
