Mamata to speak at Oxford University on March 27

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will speak at Oxford University on March 27 on ‘Social Development: Empowerment of Women and Children.’

Describing the development as a “proud moment for Bengal,” the Trinamool Congress announced that the party chairperson will speak before a distinguished gathering of students and researchers at Oxford University.

“Smt. @MamataOfficial has been invited by the prestigious Oxford University to deliver a keynote address in London. On March 27, Bengal’s CM will speak on ‘Social Development: Empowerment of Women and Children’ before a distinguished gathering of students and researchers at Oxford University,” the Trinamool Congress posted on ‘X’ from its official handle.

The website of Kellogg College, University of Oxford, says that the lecture of the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled from 17:30 to 18:30 p.m. on March 27.

The website adds that Ms. Banerjee will be in conversation with “our college president, Prof. Jonathan Michie, and Bynum Tudor Fellow at Kellogg, Lord Karan Bilimoria.”

Political journey

“The discussion will be focused on ‘Social Development — Girl, Child, and Women Empowerment.’ It will provide a rare opportunity to talk with one of India’s most influential leaders about her remarkable journey in politics, literature, and cultural advocacy,” the website of Kellogg College says.

Highlighting the achievements of Mamata Banerjee’s government, the website says that her government has introduced several welfare programmes aimed at empowering marginalised communities and women, and she has focused on improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, and rural development.

Mamata Banerjee has been in power in West Bengal for nearly 14 years, since defeating the Left Front government, which held power for 34 years. Her government’s flagship schemes include Kanyashree Prakalpa, a cash incentive scheme for school going girls, which received the United Nations highest award for public service to empower the girl child with education

In 2021, her government introduced the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, where cash endowments are given to women across the State. These schemes not only make cash available to women and children of the state but also help Mamata Banerjee retain her support among the State’s electorate.
