Initial warning sounded in Mullaperiyar dam as water storage level crosses 136 feet

The Water Resources Department in Thekkady has issued an initial warning as the water level in Mullaperiyar reservoir crossed the 136 feet mark (permitted level is 142 ft.) at 10 p.m. on Saturday (June 28, 2025).

With widespread rainfall in many parts of the Western Ghats, the storage level in the reservoir has been rising steadily.

At 6 a.m., the water level stood at 136.15 feet with an inflow of 1,884 cusecs and discharge of 2,469 cusecs. Periyar dam received 44.8 mm rainfall and Thekkadi recorded 31.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. There was no rainfall in other catchment areas.

The officials said all the 13 surplus shutters of Periyar dam would be raised by 10 cm around Sunday noon and the surplus discharge would be 250 cusecs tentatively.

Farmers’ in the Cumbum Valley welcomed the rising storage level and hoped it would reach the permitted level shortly.
