Helsinki becomes first city of its size to earn prestigious Green Destinations Certificate – ET TravelWorld

Helsinki has been awarded the Green Destinations GSTC certificate, marking a significant milestone in its ambition to become the world’s most sustainable travel destination. The Finnish capital is the first city with over half a million residents to achieve this recognition, meeting the rigorous criteria set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

The Green Destinations GSTC certificate is a testament to Helsinki’s commitment to sustainability, adhering to over 280 strict criteria covering environmental, cultural, social, economic, and governance aspects. The criteria are developed in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and the Rainforest Alliance, among others.

Tourism Director Nina Vesterinen of the City of Helsinki remarked, “This is a major achievement. It demonstrates Helsinki’s exceptionally high commitment to promoting sustainability in all its areas.” Helsinki’s pursuit of sustainability has been a long-term focus, with the city’s strategy aiming to make it the world’s most sustainable travel destination by 2021. This latest accomplishment, alongside its position at the top of the Global Destination Sustainability Index in 2024, brings Helsinki closer than ever to realising that goal.

Finland, consistently ranked the happiest country globally, has seen Helsinki lead sustainable urban development. The city’s hospitality and tourism sectors are key players in this success, with most hotels and tourist attractions holding environmental certifications and committing to sustainable practices.

As the European Union tightens legislation to prevent greenwashing, Helsinki’s verified sustainability credentials become increasingly important. Vesterinen emphasised the significance of certifications like the Green Destinations certificate and the Global Destination Sustainability Index, noting, “Helsinki makes every effort to prove the veracity of its sustainability work, ensuring transparency and enabling consumers to make more sustainable choices.”
