Grandson of DMK functionary arrested for the murder of youth in Thirumangalam

Thirumangalam Police has so far arrested three persons, including the grandson of a DMK functionary, for murdering a youth and injuring another by ramming their motorcycle on School Road. The murder is a fall-out of a dispute over a love affair, according to police sources.

On Monday night, S. Nithin Sai, 20 of Ayanavaram, was killed after an SUV rammed the two-wheeler on which he was riding pillion, near SBOA School in Anna Nagar. His friend, Abishek, 20, who was riding the motorcycle, was also injured.

Though treated as a hit-and-run case initially, the police altered it into a murder case after preliminary inquiries revealed that the car intentionally hit the motorcycle.

The case was transferred to Thirumangalam Law and Order police from the Thirumangalam traffic investigation wing, after the injured Abishek gave a statement, and Nithin Sai’s father, Suresh, lodged a complaint.

Police sources said Nithin Sai was a third-year student at a private college in Mylapore. On Monday night, he left home to attend a birthday party hosted by his friend, Mohan, at a nearby mall. His college juniors, including Venkatesh, also went to the party. There, Chandru, 22, called Venkatesh over the phone, and abused the latter for allegedly following a girl whom he knew. He then told Venkatesh and his friends to meet him near SBOA school. Venkatesh, Nithin, and others went to the spot on two-wheelers, hoping to settle the dispute. Venkatesh then went over to the car in which Chandru and his friends were sitting, while his other friends waited nearby.

Chandru is the grandson of DMK functionary Dhanasekaran, who is a Corporation Councillor and the chairman of a Corporation Standing Committee. His mother, too, is a DMK functionary.

The FIR said Chandru and the others told Venkatesh that they intended to kill the group, and threateningly hit one of their two wheelers with their car. Frightened by this, Abhishek and Nithin Sai fled the place on a two-wheeler. However, the gang chased them and rammed their vehicle, causing Nithin to die on the spot and injuring Abhishek.

On Tuesday night, the police arrested Chandru and Haroon, who reportedly drove the car, after they went to the Thirumangalam police station with their supporters. Search is on for two more suspects.

Police sources said while Chandru had told them that he had no intention of murdering the victim, and did not drive the car, Haroon alleged that he drove the vehicle only to scare the others. All three arrested were produced before a court on Wednesday evening.
