Many State government offices in Tamil Nadu, including those in the capital city of Chennai, wore a deserted look on Tuesday (February 25, 2025) with employees going on ‘mass casual leave’ as part of a call for agitation given by the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations-Government Employees Organisation (JACTTO-GEO). The members of the two organisations staged a demonstration at Ezhilagam complex in Chennai, exerting pressure on the State government to consider their charter of demands.
The marathon talks held between JACTTO-GEO representatives and a four-member team of Ministers on Monday (February 24, 2025) had brought no conclusive resolution.
Speaking to mediapersons, the representatives said their 10-point charter of demands, including the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, had not been considered by the DMK government for the past four years. They said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had extended support to the JACTTO-GEO’s demands when he was the Leader of the Opposition but failed to fulfil them after coming to power.
The protesters also raised slogans against the State government. “Despite having met the Chief Minister seven times and the group of Ministers thrice in the last four years, the State government is seeking more time to consider our demands. We strongly condemn the State government. The organising committee of the JACTTO-GEO will meet and decide on the further course of action,” said Gandhiraj, an office-bearer of JACTTO-GEO.
