Four fishermen allege mid-sea assault by Sri Lankan Navy

Four fishermen who had set sail for fishing from Pudukottai district have alleged they were assaulted by the Sri Lankan Navy mid-sea while fishing on Wednesday evening, and that their boat suffered damage.

The fishermen had ventured into the sea on board a mechanised boat from the Kottaipattinam fishing harbour in the district on Wednesday morning.

Coastal Security Group and police sources citing the fishermen’s version said the Sri Lankan Navy’s vessel rammed their boat causing some damage to it.  The fishermen were allegedly assaulted too.

The fishermen returned to the shore on Thursday morning and informed the local fishermen association about the incident.

The names of the fishermen were given as G. Sasibaranam (56), K. Sethu (55), M. Mahendran (42) and M. Muniraj (35). The sources further said the fishermen were yet to lodge a written complaint in this regard.
