Former Puppalguda Sarpanch arrested for misappropriation of over ₹2 crore in panchayat funds

The Narsingi police on Friday, June 20 arrested Maheshwaram Sunitha, the former sarpanch of Puppalguda village, in connection with a case of misappropriation of public funds.

The arrest follows a complaint from the Divisional Panchayat Officer of Rajendranagar, citing that during her tenure as sarpanch, Ms. Sunitha diverted ₹2,02,30,885 belonging to the Grama Panchayat. Although she repaid ₹23,68,618 of this amount after being directed by the Telangana Grama Panchayat Tribunal, the police said that the acts amounted to criminal breach of trust and cheating by a public servant.

Acting on the directions of the Telangana Lokayukta, the police registered a case and they said that they had found sufficient documentary evidence, including tribunal orders, enquiry reports, payment challans, and the accused’s own written admission of liability. The accused official was arrested following due legal procedure and produced before the court for judicial remand. Further investigation is underway.
