For the first time since the launch of Chennai Metro Rail services, the trains carried 1.03 crore passengers in July 2025. Compared to June, 11.5 lakh more passengers used the service in July, registering a 12.5% jump in ridership.
Ten years following the start of Metro Rail services, the network saw an average of 3.3 lakh passengers a day in July, a marked spike compared to the previous months. Ridership for the month peaked on July 4, with 3,74,948 passengers using the service. While the average passenger traffic a day was 2.87 lakh passengers in May, it rose to 3.07 lakh in June.
Sources said that while there was a growth in footfall across the network, a few stations, such as Thousand Lights, saw a significant increase. “We believe some new companies have opened up close to the stations and are seeing a flurry of passengers during the peak hours. From about 14,000 passengers a day, it has surged to 17,000 passengers a day,” a source said.
