Five of a Sri Lankan Tamil family reach Rameswaram

Five members of a Sri Lankan Tamil family illegally reached Rameswaram through a boat during early hours on Monday (June 9, 2025).

Police said the family comprising M. Mohammed Kiyas (43) of Kandy, his wife M. Fathima Farhana (34) and children M. Mohammed Yahya (12), M. Alisha (4) and M. Amira (4) that had travelled on a boat were dropped off at the shore between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi in the early hours of the day.

The local police, upon getting the information, alerted the marine police. Marine police personnel secured them and took them to their office for questioning.

Sources said the family told the police that they had fled their country due to the poor economic situation. They are likely to be lodged at the Mandapam Rehabilitation Centre for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.
