As 61-day-fishing ban period was to end on June 14 and boats were to enter sea for fishing from June 15, Fisheries Department, citing heavy winds, has warned the fishermen not to enter the sea till further announcements were made.
Entering sea for fishing a day before the ban period was an usual practice of the fishermen from the regions to enjoy more catch. Though it was unlawful and they faced repercussions from the Fisheries Department, they continued to follow.
However, this time, due to a unanimous decision passed by the fishermen associations in the district, they decided to venture into sea after procuring prior token. As trawler fishermen from Pamban and Mandapam areas were preparing to enter sea for fishing on Sunday, the alert from the Fisheries department, has discouraged them from entering the sea.
Further, Rameswaram fishermen who are to enter sea on Monday (June 16) are also instructed to wait for further announcements.
