Residents of Mokkaiyam Palayam at Villarasampatti in Erode city have alleged that a chemical factory operating in the area discharged effluents into a nearby stream, leading to water contamination on Monday (June 16, 2025).
The unit, which manufactures sodium silicate liquid and other major chemicals, has been functioning for the past 10 years. According to residents, the discharge of effluents began on Sunday night, and by Monday morning, the water in the stream had turned white.
Local people, who use the stream water for bathing and washing clothes, noticed the change and raised concerns. Officials from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) were informed, following which they collected water samples from the stream and inspected the factory premises.
TNPCB officials assured residents that appropriate action would be taken based on the laboratory test results.
