Civic body to appoint 222 teachers to fill vacancies in Chennai Schools: Mayor


The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) would appoint 222 teachers to fill vacancies in Chennai Schools, Mayor R. Priya said at the Council meeting.

Replying to Councillors, who flagged various problems pertaining to school education in the city, Ms. Priya said the civic body had announced various welfare schemes for the students of Chennai Schools.

Pointing to the improvement in school infrastructure, she said modern classrooms had been constructed in Corporation schools.

The Corporation would continue to implement welfare schemes for school children across the city, she further said.

Councillors in various zones have complained about rising number of vacancies in teachers’ posts in Chennai Schools, and urged the civic body to improve school infrastructure in the city. The number of students has also been decreasing from 1.3 lakh students in 419 GCC schools.

Refund property tax

The Council also passed a resolution to refund excess property tax paid by a resident, following the orders of the Tamil Nadu Local Bodies Ombudsman, considering her financial situation.
