Chennai’s annual self-respect rainbow Pride March 2025 held

The 17th edition of Chennai’s annual Self-Respect Pride March saw many a colourful turnout, from LGBTQIA+ community members and allies, who were not only from across the city, but also from different corners of the country, and even a few who flew in from as far as London.

Participants arrived decked in rainbow colours, holding placards and raising slogans that called for inclusivity, intersectionality, dignity, and personal rights of LGBTQIA+. The event also saw the participation of celebrities such as Therukural Arivu.

Last-minute hurdles

Activists from Sahodaran, a community development centre for transpersons and LGBTQIA+, said that this year’s march came together despite last-minute hurdles in getting permission.

“The permission came in late, so the numbers were slightly lower than last year, but it was heartwarming to see people coming from other cities too. At the event, we introduced a new initiative focused on representing the diversity within the community, by prominently carrying LGBTQIA+ pride flags, such as trans flag, lesbian flag, bisexual flag, non-binary flag, genderqueer flag, and so many,” says Jaya, General Manager at Sahodaran.

An information vehicle carried details about the history of Pride March. Ms. Jaya credited the success of the event to the team of volunteers, both community members as well as allies, who participated wholeheartedly, as well as Egmore police, for their cooperation.

This time, the event also saw some parents joining as allies to support their children from the community.

The Pride March also saw activists taking the mic to speak on issues the community faces – from access to healthcare to employment opportunities and equal rights in marriage.

Showcasing talent

This edition also hosted a ‘Naangal’ session, where many performers from the community and allies showcased dance, live painting, spoken word poetry, and many more talents.
