Body parts of four-year-old killed in leopard attack near Valparai recovered

The Forest Department on Saturday recovered the body parts of a four-year-old girl a day after she was mauled to death by a leopard at a tea estate near Valparai.

The girl Roshini, daughter of a migrant couple from Jharkhand, was playing near her house on Friday evening when the animal mauled and dragged her into the bushes, according to an eye witness.

Though searches were carried out at the tea estate in Pachamalai following the attack, the girl could not be found. The body parts were located after the Forest Department brought in additional manpower on Saturday and intensified the search effort.

“We will be placing traps to capture the leopard. A few locations in the Shola patches, which serve as hiding spots for the wild animals, have been identified for the placing of traps,” Devendra Kumar Meena, Deputy Director of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve and District Forest Officer of Pollachi Division, said.

Financial relief

The Forest Department handed over immediate financial relief of ₹50,000 to the bereaved parents.

The rest, out of the ₹10 lakh compensation, will be settled within 24 hours after the receipt of certifications from the Revenue Department, it is learnt.
