Following the heavy wind alert in the coastal areas on June 15, Fisheries Department has again issued warning for fishermen not to enter sea on Monday (June 16) too, as the heavy wind alert continues.
As opposed to previous years when the end of the fishing ban period would be a celebration for the fishing community and the sea would be buzzing with boats, due to the wind alert this year, boats were seen anchored on the shore on Sunday.
As fishermen from Rameswaram, Pamban, Mandapam and other areas in the district geared up for entering the sea after 61-days-fishing ban period since last week, the alert put a stoppage to the preparations.
Fishermen in the ban period readied their trawlers by cleaning, repairing, replacing parts, painting and renewing licenses. Towards the end of the ban period, following the inspection of officials from the fisheries department, documents were issued permitting them to enter the sea.
Fishermen from Rameswaram area said that as fishermen from Pamban and Mandapam were to enter sea on Sunday and they were to enter sea on Monday, the unprecedented weather has discouraged them.
