A particular type of bag led to the arrest of a three-member gang of balloon sellers from Rajasthan who were allegedly involved in breaking into houses in Bengaluru.

Rajesh, 42, Karan Singh, 26, and Suresh Karan, 22, used to move around residential areas on the pretext of selling balloons, but also to keep a check on locked houses.

They would zero in on a house that was locked and double check to confirm no one was around. While two of them would enter the house by breaking open the lock, the third one would keep a watch outside, police said.

They had allegedly burgled a house in 2nd stage A block at Rajaji Nagar on February 20 when the family had locked the house and left for work. The trio got 35 grams of gold valuables and 1.7 kilos of silver articles.

Based on a complaint by the family, the police verified the CCTV footage from in and around the area. They zeroed in on the trio. The police kept a watch and detained the trio near Srirampura metro station.

The accused would sleep on the footpath, or at railway stations, or bus stands. One of them would go back to Rajasthan to sell the booty to a jeweller and return with the money, police said.

Based on their confession, police recovered stolen valuables worth ₹5 lakh.
