All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO) staged a protest at Freedom Park on Saturday, demanding the State government to provide scholarships to all eligible students.
Addressing the gathering, former Lokayukta Justice N. Santosh Hegde stated that the very meaning of democracy had changed today. It has turned into a government of a few, by a few, and for a few, he said.
“Health and education are the primary responsibilities of the government towards the people. The government, which gives assurances of financial assistance during school and college admissions, must uphold its promises. If the government truly cares about students and claims that the budget is insufficient, then legislators and ministers should contribute their salaries towards student scholarships,” he said.
He also asserted that the closure of government schools is not due to low enrollment but rather due to the lack of basic facilities. He urged students not to stop this fight under any circumstance, as it is for their future and their families.
Social activist Ugranarsimhegowda said successive governments were increasingly favouring privatisation in education, which creates discrimination among students. He condemned the government’s neglectful attitude towards students who are entirely dependent on scholarships.
