Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of South Western Railway’s Bengaluru Division, on Wednesday said that a host of infrastructure projects and proposals by the division, aimed at decongesting rail traffic and improving commuter experience in the city and surrounding areas, have been planned.
Among the key updates, the DRM said that the 38-km Bengaluru Cantonment–Whitefield quadrupling project, fully funded by the Railways at a cost of ₹492.87 crore, is progressing steadily.
“Redevelopment works are under way at Bengaluru Cantonment and Yeshwantpur railway stations, with investments of ₹484.58 crore and ₹377.86 crore, respectively. These revamps will include modern station buildings, air concourses, escalators, lifts, solar power systems, sewage treatment plants, and parking structures,” he added.
The Yeshwantpur–Channasandra doubling (25 km, ₹683.57 crore) and Baiyyappanahalli–Hosur doubling (48 km, ₹1,148 crore) projects are also advancing, with the latter already 83% complete. “Meanwhile, new lines such as the Marikuppam–Kuppam (23.7 km) and Bettahalsoor–Rajanukunte bypass (6.14 km) are in various stages of construction and land acquisition,” Mr. Singh said.
He said the final location surveys have been sanctioned for several projects, including the much-anticipated 288-km Bengaluru Circular Rail. DPRs for other expansion plans, such as the quadrupling of the Baiyyappanahalli–Hosur and the Bengaluru–Tumakuru lines are under way and would be submitted by August 2025.
