The Public Works Department (PWD) and the Delhi police were on Thursday directed to upgrade medical infrastructure and improve the security of the Delhi government’s Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) campus, as per a statement from Raj Niwas.
The directions were issued at a review meeting called by the MAMC Dean and the Directors of Lok Nayak Hospital, G.B. Pant Hospital, and Guru Nanak Eye Centre Complex, all of which are located on the MAMC campus in central Delhi, and attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena, and Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh.
Issues related to the shortage of accommodation and the security of students and doctors were discussed at the meeting.
Dr. Poonam Narang, the Dean of MAMC, said the medical college, established in 1958 for 200 students, currently houses over 3,200 students.
The statement by Raj Niwas pointed out that the PWD, which had been directed to expand the accommodation facilities on the campus, was “unable to work on the project because the land meant for expansion had been captured by encroachers and land mafia”.
Slew of directions
The PWD was directed to prepare a plan and estimates for creating accommodation and associated infrastructure for at least 4,000 students and doctors. Land-owning agencies and hospital authorities were asked to immediately conduct a survey of the land allocated to the medical institutions on the MAMC campus in order to help identify and remove encroachments.
The police were asked to ensure stringent action against bootleggers and drug dealers in the area.
