To fill specialist vacancies in hospitals under the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMS), 154 doctors (postgraduates and specialists), who were recruited by the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB) earlier this year, were moved to DMS hospitals on Thursday.
Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, at the inauguration of a workshop on obstetric anaesthesia for anaesthetists on Friday, said, “Steps are being taken to fill vacant posts in DMS hospitals. Three months ago, 2,642 doctors were recruited through the MRB. Measures are being taken to shift those with post-graduate qualification and specialist doctors to speciality departments in government district headquarters and taluk hospitals. As a part of this, 154 specialists – 44 obstetrician-gynaecologists, 48 anaesthetists and 62 paediatricians – were transferred after conducting counselling.”
The doctors, who were initially posted under the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, were relieved and moved to the DMS.
New health infrastructure
The State will soon get 208 Urban Health and Wellness Centres (UHWC), in addition to the 500 UHWCs in place. The staff for the centres – a doctor, staff nurse, health inspector and support staff each – were recruited through district health societies.
In addition, the recruitment for 50 new Primary Health Centres (PHC) and urban PHCs will be completed in 10 days. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate both the UHWCs and PHCs, Mr. Subramanian said.
Work is in progress to construct 25 district headquarters hospitals across 19 districts. Mr. Stalin will soon inaugurate these facilities, which are coming up at a cost of ₹1,018 crore, he added.
Workshops held
Separate workshops for obstetricians-gynaecologists, anaesthetists, and paediatricians were held to reduce maternal and infant deaths in the State, he said, adding that 129 anaesthetists were taking part in Friday’s workshop on obstetric anaesthesia.
P. Senthilkumar, Health Secretary, and Arun Thamburaj, Mission Director, National Health Mission, Tamil Nadu, were present.
