The death toll in the old-age home food poisoning case in Tenkasi rose to four on Friday as one more woman died while undergoing treatment at the government hospital here.
Shankar Ganesh, 42, of Shencottai died on Wednesday due to the suspected food poisoning in the lunch served to the 59 inmates of the home in Sundrapandiapuram. Following this, Ambika, 45, of Shencottai and S. Murugammal, 45, of Chokkampatti died on Thursday. Lakshmi, 70, of Madurai died at the hospital on Friday. Eight more inmates, who were undergoing treatment at the Tenkasi Government Hospital, were shifted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) on Friday.
“Since all the patients are aged, their condition is being closely monitored. Except one patient, Mariammal, all others are responding to treatment and their condition is stable. If they progress well, they are likely to be discharged within the next three days,” said C. Revathi Balan, dean, TVMCH. Ms. Mariammal is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of TVMCH.
