A team from the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti reviewed various water resources projects in the city to evaluate the works and recommend them for the sixth National Water Awards.

The team comprising officials of Central Water Commission, Central Groundwater Board and Ministry of Jal Shakti visited various sites and facilities in the city to prepare the report. They had earlier reviewed various other water conservation and management initiatives in other parts of the State, including Tiruchi and Tirunelveli, during their four-day visit.

Officials from the Water Resources Department noted that Tamil Nadu has been shortlisted for the award. It is being given in nine categories, including Best State, Best Urban Local Body and Best Water User Association.

The central team visited the tertiary treatment reverse osmosis plant at Koyambedu, Chennai Metrowater’s reuse plant that treats wastewater and caters to industrial needs. They also visited the WRD’s State Ground and Surface Water Resources Data Centre and inspected the research and development institutes.

A detailed report on the significant water projects and flood mitigation efforts in Chennai was also presented to the team. Some of the projects highlighted include a project to interlink Tamirabharani river with Karumeniyar and Nambiyar, extension, renovation and modernisation of Cauvery basin and Lower Bhavani sub-basin, repair, renovation and restoration of waterbodies.

Various reforms in water sector and water conservation and water use efficiency efforts, including through irrigation, water reuse and river rejuvenation projects, were discussed during the field visits, officials added.
