Hundreds heading to the Airport Metro were in for shock as the trains halted at the previous station — Meenambakkam — thanks to a technical glitch on Wednesday. Hordes of upset commuters rushed out of the Meenambakkam Metro station, with some even trying to reach the airport on time for their flights.
Of the two corridors in the Phase I network, the trains of corridor I have to end their trips at the Airport Metro station. Around 5.30 p.m., this trip was terminated at Meenambakkam Metro due to a signalling glitch. There were no trips between the two stations, sources said.
In a statement, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said: “Due to a technical issue, train services to Airport Metro are temporarily suspended. However, services between Wimco Nagar Depot and Meenambakkam are operating normally. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
Sources said mini-buses and share autorickshaws were transporting people between the stations. V. Govindarajan of Tambaram said he was utterly disappointed with the Metro Rail for ruining the passengers’ plans in the last minute. He said since many had to take autorickshaws to the Airport Metro station to pick up the vehicles that they had parked there. “Many of us struggled to exit during the rush and were exhausted. Why should we spend a hefty amount on autorickshaw fare due to CMRL’s fault? This is not what we expected,” he added.
The issue was resolved around 7 p.m., CMRL sources said.
