Three killed in van-car collision on Madurai-Rameswaram National Highway


 

Three persons were killed and 17 others injured when a van and car collided near Rameswaram on Monday.  

A van with 21 passengers was proceeding from Virudhachalam to Rameswaram, when it collided head-on with a car that was going from Keezhakarai to Rameswaram on Madurai-Danushkodi National Highway, police said.  

The incident happened near the river bridge on the national highway, killing Venkateswaram, 27, of Keezhakarai, a van occupant, and Mahalakshmi, 12, of Virudhachalam, who was in the car, on the spot.  

The remaining three persons in the car and around 14 people in the van were injured and were admitted at Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital. Another car passenger, J. Palanivel, 21, a native of Thanjavur, died while undergoing treatment.  

Uchipatti police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
