Agitation blocking road: petition seeks contempt proceedings against UDF leaders

A petition was filed before the Kerala High Court on Tuesday seeking action against Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala and a few UDF MLAs for alleged contempt of court.

The petition, filed by N. Prakash of Maradu, stated that they addressed members of the Kerala Asha Workers’ Association who were staging a day-and-night strike from February 10 in front the Secretariat reportedly blocking a footpath and a portion of the road and even putting chairs atop them.

In his petition, he sated that government agencies, including the police, were prohibited from granting permission to hold meetings on roads and road margins.

The court directed the respondents to file additional affidavits stating the measures taken to ensure that activities that obstructed public roads and footpaths were not repeated, and posted the matter for hearing on March 3.

The petitioner had filed petitions before the court, including against the blockade of a road in connection with the CPI(M)’s Vanchiyoor area committee meeting in 2024.
