As part of a crackdown on illegal liquor smuggling and sales, the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of Mayiladuthurai district arrested 93 people in 11 days during vehicle checking.
Following the directive of Superintendent of Police K. Stalin, the authorities intensified checking of vehicles at all checkpoints in the district to curb illegal liquor transportation and sales. Under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) M. Sundaresan, enforcement inspectors Annai Abirami and Jaya, along with their teams, carried out rigorous checks between February 23 and March 5.
During this period, 83 cases were registered at various checkpoints, including Nandalur, Nalladai, Ayyappadi, and Kollidam Aanaikaran Chathiram, leading to the seizure of 450 bottles of liquor from Puducherry and 300 bottles of illicit arrack. All arrested individuals were produced before the court and granted bail, except for 10 individuals who were sent to jail for their involvement in major liquor smuggling operations.
The names of the 10 accused lodged in jail were given as: Prabhakaran, 40, of Sirkazhi Eesaniya Street; Balamurugan, 31, of Poompuhar; Panneerselvam, 65, of Mandhai Annavasal; Balasubramanian, 26, of Tharangambadi; Palaniselvam, 48, of Tharangambadi; Jeeva, 60, from Thiruvilandur, Ayyappan ,39, from Radhanallur in Sirkazhi, Mani ,54, from Ananthamangalam, Marimuthu, 53, from Puthur, and Nagarajan, 65, from Melappanayur in the district.
