As many as 262 villages in Kalaburagi district will face water scarcity during the peak of summer this year. The district authorities have been making efforts to mitigate potable water shortage by taking appropriate steps to meet challenges.
As per data provided by the Rural Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Department, of the 262 villages identified as problematic for the three months (March, April and May), 72 are in Aland taluk, 37 in Afzalpur taluk, 28 in Kalagi taluk, 25 in Kamalapur, 23 each in Kalaburagi and Chittapur taluks, 17 in Sedam taluk , 13 each in Chincholi and Yaddrami taluks, eight in Jewargi taluk and four villages are in Shahabad taluk.
As of now, 69 villages, including 23 in Aland taluk, 10 each in Kamalapur and Kalaburagi taluks and eight villages in Sedam taluk are already facing severe water scarcity in March.
It is said that the number of villages facing water scarcity may increase to 165 by April and further go up to 262 in May.
Borewells
A comprehensive plan has been prepared to tackle drinking water shortage by reviving dried borewells and piped supply.
Of the 1,190 existing borewells in the district, 729 are in working condition, while 906 borewells functioned during last summer.
The number of defunct borewells has increased to 454 this summer from 357 last year. The authorities will take up flushing and re-drilling works for 355 borewells.
The administration has identified 323 private borewells and is planning to hire them for supplying water through tankers to villages facing water scarcity.
